The outdoor arts festival that fills Winchester's streets with wonder is skipping summer 2026, but organisers promise a bigger, bolder comeback next year.

The arts and education charity Play to the Crowd, which both produces Hat Fair and runs Theatre Royal Winchester, has branded this period a "Pause with a Purpose" — a year of reflection, research and reimagining before the festival hits the streets again. In other words, they're not just killing time.
What's Actually Happening Behind the Scenes
Play to the Crowd has spent the past year reviewing exactly how Hat Fair can best serve local communities, artists and audiences as part of its charitable mission. The result is a clearer, more ambitious vision for what the festival can become — not just a summer knees-up, but a year-round launchpad for creative projects and community partnerships.
The charity has set out four concrete ambitions: establishing Hat Fair as an international example of outdoor arts enhancing community identity; becoming a nationally recognised testing ground for new artistic work; offering professional development for emerging outdoor arts makers; and championing creative access for local and national talent. That's a serious wish list for a festival that, until now, many simply knew as "that brilliant thing in Winchester every July."
CEO and Artistic Director Deryck Newland said the pause had given the organisation "valuable time to reflect on the festival's purpose and impact" and that they are developing a vision that "builds on Hat Fair's rich heritage while ensuring it continues to thrive as a vital cultural event for Winchester and the wider Outdoor Arts sector."
Scouting the World for Something Extraordinary
It's not all meetings and strategy documents. Newland and Festivals and Projects Producer Rose Slade are already travelling to festivals across the UK and internationally, hunting for the most exciting outdoor arts performances to bring to Winchester in 2027. Someone's got to do it.
Those trips are feeding into ongoing conversations with potential funders, partners and stakeholders — conversations the charity says are essential to securing long-term investment and ensuring Hat Fair's survival well beyond 2027. The stakes, in other words, are higher than they might look from the outside.
