Welsh Euro Star Jonny Williams Swaps League Two for Eastleigh in Surprise Spitfires Swoop
A man who lined up against the best in Europe is now heading to SO50 — and Eastleigh fans should be very, very excited about that.
Eastleigh FC have pulled off one of their most eyebrow-raising signings in recent memory, confirming the arrival of Welsh international Jonny Williams on a permanent deal. The 32-year-old midfielder — a man who has graced Premier League pitches and gone toe-to-toe with Europe's finest — has pitched up at the Silverlake Stadium until the end of the season. It's the kind of signing that makes you do a double-take.
From Selhurst Park to SO50
Williams came through the Crystal Palace academy and made 29 appearances for the Eagles during their promotion campaign in the 2012-13 season. He went on to represent Palace in the Premier League on multiple occasions — no small feat — while also racking up Championship experience on loan at Ipswich Town, Nottingham Forest, Milton Keynes Dons and Sunderland. That's a CV that most non-league clubs can only dream of walking through the door.
After 17 years associated with Crystal Palace, Williams made the move to Charlton Athletic, where he made 60 appearances across three seasons and was part of a side that earned promotion to the Championship. He was clearly still a player who could make things happen at that level.
League Two Grind Before the Spitfires Call
More recently, Williams spent five seasons split between Swindon Town and Gillingham in League Two, racking up a combined 171 appearances for the two clubs. That's not a man coasting — that's a professional who kept showing up, week in, week out, at a tough level of the football pyramid. The experience he carries into Eastleigh's dressing room is considerable.
For a Spitfires side looking to push on this season, landing someone who knows how to win matches and how to handle pressure is the sort of business that can shift a campaign.
A Wales Legend in Hampshire
If the club career doesn't sell it, the international record certainly should. Williams earned 33 caps for Wales, featuring in their extraordinary run to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 — one of the greatest achievements in Welsh football history. He also appeared at Euro 2020 and received a World Cup call-up for Qatar 2022 before retiring from international football at the start of 2023.
This is a player who has shared a dressing room with Gareth Bale and faced some of the best midfielders on the planet. Now he's bringing all of that knowledge and composure to the National League.
'A Really Good Feel to the Place'
Williams himself sounded genuinely enthused upon signing, telling the club: "There's a really good feel to the place! I am really excited to get going, and hopefully we can have a good season."
Those aren't the words of someone just picking up a final paycheque. That's a footballer who still wants to compete — and Eastleigh will be hoping that hunger translates directly onto the pitch.
What Happens Next
All eyes will now be on Williams making his debut for the Spitfires, with supporters eager to see exactly what a former Premier League and international midfielder looks like in Eastleigh colours. If he can bring even a fraction of his top-level experience to bear on National League matches, the Spitfires have themselves a serious operator in the middle of the park. Watch this space.
